The conference explores the textile medium, technology, material and metaphor in the history and theory of architecture from antiquity to the present. Contemporary experiments and phenomena in the architectural discourse open new perspectives onto the history and theory of architecture. Textile surfaces create architectural, social and topological spaces and are essential to the built space. Their qualities such as elasticity, foldability, plasticity, opacity and transparency are an important part of architectural language, but have not yet been studied systematically. The tension between the textile and the tectonic generates notions such as building as clothing and myths of the textile origins of architecture, and the ornamental grammar of textures connects building structures to the textus, the textual weaving. The textile medium connecting a variety of fields of human activity is equally open to historical, sociological, psychological, technological and aesthetic enquiries as it addresses issues of veiling and revealing and phenomena such as the fold, the fleece, the membrane, the curtain, the interface or the network.Historians and theorists of architecture are invited to reflect on the textility in architecture from a broad thematic and historical perspective as to contributing to a history of the textile medium.

Die Tagung geht der Frage nach, wie textile Oberflächen in der Architektur seit der Antike bis heute architektonischen, sozialen, topologischen Raum erzeugen. Die dem textilen Stoff innewohnenden Eigenschaften von Elastizität, Faltbarkeit, Plastizität, Opazität, Transparenz geben ihm ein weitreichendes Potential als Gestaltungsmittel in der Architektur. Aus dem Widerspruch zum tektonischen Prinzip entsteht eine Spannung zwischen Textil und Architektur. Daher changiert der Status des Textilen in der architektonischen Raumgestaltung zwischen der applizierten und additiv bekleidenden Fläche und dem funktionalen Strukturkern des Baukörpers. Die textile Verflechtung als architektonisches Prinzip, das seit den Ursprüngen des Bauens mit einer mythischen Genealogie ausgestattet ist, schafft in der Architektur eine transitorische Ebene zwischen dem grammatikalisch geordneten Ornament und der haptisch zur Schau gestellten Materialität. Diese grundlegenden Fragestellungen bieten Anknüpfungspunkte in historischer, soziologischer, psychologischer und vor allem medientheoretischer Hinsicht, die solche Problematiken wie die Hierarchisierung von Grenzen zwischen Innen und Aussen, Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit mittels textiler Flächen, aber auch die praktische Schutzfunktion des Stoffes mit einbeziehen. Zu untersuchen wären ebenfalls neue Technologien der architektonischen Verschleierung mithilfe textilartiger Membranen und die Simulation des Interface als Fläche der Kommunikation, insbesondere im Kontext ihrer Verankerung in den historischen Erfahrungen der Architektur mit dem textilen Medium.
