The Max Planck Society and the University of Zurich are envisioning a 5-year centre in Digital Art History / Digital Visual Studies, to be based in Zurich starting 2019. The centre will consist of a group of researchers and funded PhD students, and will combine fundamental research with software development and deployment. The centre will collaborate closely with a number of international partners, and is partnered in Zurich by the Swiss Art Research Infrastructure (SARI).
The exploratory meeting wishes to bring leading scholars in the field of digital visual studies together as to identify the state-of-the-arts, to learn from their current and future endeavors and to find potential partners. We will focus on the specificity of art history and visual studies (Bildwissenschaft), and ask whether it engenders particular methodologies and research questions beyond those currently practiced in the digital humanities.
The meeting is structured by thematic points of interest. Each ‘focus’ hour will start with some remarks from the speaker, moving to a more general discussion, in the course of which all participants will be invited to comment.
