The focus of the Field Study Trip were Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte (with a one-day trip to the contemporary art collection and park in Inhotim) and Brasília. While the first excursion to Brazil in 2011 concentrated mainly on baroque and colonial architecture, this excursion was mainly occupied with the modern period. A key aspect of the field trip was the critical discussion of the relation between (neo-) baroque and modern architecture, e.g. how forms migrate and how they are appropriated, but also the way architects and art historians establish a narrative that traces back modern architecture to Brazilian baroque architecture.
