M.A. Barbara Caen (*1986 Belgien) ist seit Oktober 2008 Doktorandin und Assistentin am SNF-Projekt Eine Ikonologie des Textilen in Kunst und Architektur. Sie hat Kunstgeschichte an der Katholischen Universität Löwen (Belgien) sowie für ein Jahr an der Universität Paris IV–Sorbonne studiert. Ihre Masterarbeit untersuchte den ersten offiziellen Katalog des Museums der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen, den Johan Alfried De Laet 1849 veröffentlicht.
M. A. Barbara Caen (°1986 Belgium) has been a Ph.D student and research assistant for the SNF-project An Iconology of Textile in Art and Architecture since October 2008. She received her B. A. and M. A. in Art History from the Catholic University of Leuven and held a one-year fellowship at the University Paris IV-Sorbonne. Her Master’s thesis examined the first official catalogue of the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, published by Johan Alfried De Laet in 1849.
Der Gegenstand ihrer Doktorarbeit an der Universität Zürich analysiert die Produktion von Wandteppichen im 19. Jahrhundert. Nachdem die Tapisserie mit der französischen Revolution verfiel, erlebte sie im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts dennoch in verschiedenen Ländern eine Renaissance, sei es im Fall bestehender Manufakturen wie den Pariser Gobelins, sei es durch Neugründungen wie derjenigen im Belgischen Mecheln. Mit Hilfe von ikonografischen Studien, Archivalien, wirtschaftlichen Traktaten und von Briefwechsel strebt das Forschungsprojekt eine globale Betrachtung der europäischen Produktion von Wandteppichen (hauptsächlich in Frankreich, England und Belgien) sowie des kunstgeschichtlichen Diskurses über dieses Medium an, vom Ende der Französischen Revolution bis zum Vorabend des Ersten Weltkriegs.
