Studies & Teaching
Object of Study
The Chair of East Asian Art History at UZH trains high levels of art historical expertise and critical transferable skills by guiding students to work independently with artifacts from China, Korea, and Japan of all historical eras. Our field covers all genres of artistic expression–reaching from calligraphy, painting and sculpture to architecture and popular crafts–in their historical developments, regional contexts, and contemporary manifestations.
Unlike most programs in the humanities at UZH, East Asian Art History can be completed entirely in English.
Study Program
East Asian Art History is offered at undergraduate level as a minor of 60 ECTS credits. At the Master's level, the department offers study programs as a major of 90 ECTS credits and as a minor of 30 ECTS credits. Besides classical teaching formats such as seminars and lectures, we also offer numerous opportunities for students to gain practical experience in handling objects in hands-on exercises at domestic and international collections.
Career Paths
Our graduates typically pursue careers in academia, museums, art management and trading, the publishing industry as well as journalism and intercultural communication.
