Exkursion nach Berlin, 26.-28.03.2015

Während der dreitägigen Exkursion werden wir mit den Kurator_innen der Ostasiatischen Kunstsammlung des Museums für Asiatische Kunst Berlin ins Gespräch kommen und zahlreiche, auf Ostasien spezialisierte Galerien besuchen. Daneben wird uns die Sinologin und Keramikerin Anette Mertens durch das Porzellan-Kabinett von Schloss Charlottenburg führen und als Zusatzprogramm Interessierte in die Geheimnisse der Keramikherstellung in ihrer Werkstatt in Rathenow einführen.

Exkursion nach Stockholm

Besuch der Östasiatiska museet (The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities) in Stockholm.

The excursion examined Japan from the perspectives of East Asian and European art history. It was led by three professors (Prof. Thomsen, Prof. Gockel, Prof. Kersten) active in both disciplines and by their assistants (Christian Dunkel and Marie Kakinuma) and covered many of the major museums and sites of Japan during sixteen days of intensive travel and study.

One of the key topics of the course (and the preparatory Übung during the HS 2009) was the reception of Western art in Japan, from the 16th century onto the present. The participants examined various aspects of art, religion, and philosophy, and visited living artists as well as museum storages. They looked at specific histories of collections, of both Japanese and Western objects, and visited key architectural monuments, from Buddhist temples of the eighth century to post-modernist buildings designed in the twenty-first century.

During some parts of the excursion, students separated into groups according to subjects of expertise, and at other times they combined for cross-discipline topics. A key goal of the excursion was to cross as many historical periods and fields as possible for a full experience of Japan and its culture.

Im Herbstsemester 2008 und Frühjahrssemester 2009 nahmen mehrere Studierende der Abteilung für Kunstgeschichte Ostasiens an einem gemeinschaftlichen Projekt zwischen der Universität Zürich und dem Field Museum in Chicago teil. Die Ziele des Projekts waren:
1. die Sammlung chinesischer, japanischer und koreanischer Malerei des Field Museums zu katalogisieren und
2. den Bedarf an konservatorischen Maßnahmen zu ihrer Erhaltung zu ermitteln. Das durch die Übung erstellte Material wurde in die Bestandsakten des Chicagoer Museums übernommen und wird nun Pläne für kommende Ausstellungen und Publikationen mitbestimmen. Entscheidungen in Bezug auf zukünftige Konservierungs-maßnahmen sind z. T. auch auf der Grundlage der Arbeit der Zürcher Gruppe getroffen worden. Ein weiteres Ziel der Übung war es, Teilnehmern Methoden bei der Forschung zu ostasiatischen Malereien und der Kooperation mit modernen Museen näher zu bringen. Im Sommer 2009 konnten die Teilnehmer die Depoträume des Field Museum in Chicago besuchen und die bis dahin recherchierten Ergebnisse bei der Betrachtung der Originale überprüfen und ergänzen.
