The ‘Churches of Rome in the Middle Ages’ will continue …

The Swiss National Science Foundation is continuing to fund the infrastructure project ‘The Churches of the City of Rome in the Middle Ages, 1050-1300’! The funds awarded in September 2024 will make it possible to finalise till March 2028 vol. 7 of the extensive corpus work, which was started in 2002 under the direction of Peter Cornelius Claussen at the University of Zurich and has been running since 2015 as a collaborative project between the Chair of Daniela Mondini at the Istituto di storia e teoria dell'arte e dell'architettura (ISA) of the Accademia di architettura, Università della Svizzera italiana, Mendrisio, and the Chair of Carola Jäggi at the Institute of Art History at the University of Zurich. The project centres on the architecture and liturgical furnishings of the churches of Rome from the 11th to the end of the 13th century – with a focus on the architectural furnishings (portals, wall tabernacles, schola cantorum, ciborium, ambo, throne, paschal chandeliers, funerary monuments, etc.) and the opus sectile floors, which were renewed in almost all Roman churches during this period.
